Noses are astoundingly unique. Hopefully one day all noses will have equal representation.

Throughout my life, I’ve had an odd perspective towards my nose. At the age of 14, out of the blue, I was told that I would be given a nose job when I turned 16. Without further conversation, I did not understand but subsequently believed that I needed a nose job. I hadn’t known that anything was wrong with my nose. Life happens and the nose job never happened. Throughout my life, I’ve thought that I need a nose job but I’ve never had the desire or courage to get one.

I accepted my nose and did not consider doing anything to it until I learned that the nose continues to change over time and it does not get better. I considered a DIY approach in 2000, when I began to practice facial exercises. Over the past 20 years, I’ve tried to maintain my nose angles, slope and shape using facial exercises, massage and advanced skin care practices.

The nose consists of “bone, cartilage, muscles, the subcutaneous layer, and skin”. The nose has been studied extensively in regards to surgical procedures used to improve nasal function and anatomy. More recently, there’s been a trend towards nasal rejuvenation using minimally invasive procedures to address tissue degradation and improve the appearance of the nose.

Nasal skin is susceptible to the natural skin aging process and to sun damage. As a prominent feature the nose is susceptible to photo aging which causes premature aging of the skin. Repeated exposure to ultraviolet radiation reduces skin elasticity, increases pigmentation and may result in non-cancerous or cancerous tumors.

Nasal skin can thin or thicken over time depending on the skin’s level of moisture and oil production. A rosacea type disorder can impact the vascular system and result in enlarged blood vessels and the appearance of thin red lines on the skin surface. In addition, inflammation, skin lesions and enlarged skin and pores result in a loss of sharpness and changes to the shape of the nose.

Rhinophyma is a genetic condition associated with a “large, red, bumpy or bulbous nose” that may be worsened by heat or alcohol. The cause of rhinophyma is not understood but it may be associated with advanced rosacea.

Over time, nose tissue atrophies in the area of the glabella, root, dorsum and tip. This impacts deeper tissue including cartilage and bone which become more exposed giving a skeletal appearance. The shrinking nasal muscles and change in cartilage affect the shape, sharpness and structure of the nose. The tip of the nose may become larger and droop. Over time, the defining aspects of the nose are lost. In addition to the aesthetic changes, there may be a loss in nasal function.

Mainstream Cosmetic Nasal Rejuvenation

Standard mainstream nasal rejuvenation practices previously consisted solely of surgical techniques that were used to balance facial features. This resulted in dramatic changes and long recovery times and only appealed to a small group of people. Non-invasive nasal treatments have become increasingly popular, are considered a new frontier in facial rejuvenation, and include “cosmetics, rhinofillers, botulinum toxin, fat grafting, lasers, threads, and sutures.”

Do-It-Yourself Nose Maintenance and Rejuvenation

DIY nose maintenance and rejuvenation are achieved using the same methods that are used on the entire face. It is important to note that one should never neglect the nose during any facial treatment.

In my opinion, it does not matter which particular skin care products (use pure products), facial exercise, massage or devices that you use. It is most important that you do something, anything to nourish and stimulate the skin. The synergistic effect of using several different facial rejuvenation methods produces enhanced results. Find skin care methods that fit your budget, time, and lifestyle to ensure that you will practice facial self-care on a regular basis.

Nasal Skin Care

Liberally apply all facial products including serums, lotions, creams and masks to the nose. Apply sunscreen to the nose AND apply sunscreen to the nose, yes nose, don’t forget the nose (face, neck, hands, etc) every time you go outside sunrise to sunset, 365.

The nose is the number one sunburn spot reported by dermatologists. It is essential that you layer sunscreen on the nose to protect it from sun damage and to maintain tight, clear skin with small vascular vessels.

I currently apply a DIY physical sunscreen made with 20% zinc oxide in an aloe vera base cream. In addition to sunscreen, I always protect facial skin by covering up with a scarf, hat, and/or umbrella.

Nasal Exercise

Over the past 20 years, I’ve tried to maintain my nose shape using facial exercise. I used Facercise® until I began using the FlexEffect Facial Building™ program in 2002. I am not affiliated with either facial exercise company. I can’t remember the exact progression but I practiced FE 6 days a week for about 7 years and then 3 times a week for several years. In recent years I’ve only done FE about once a month until 2021 when I began doing FE 5 to 6 days a week. I can see and feel the difference and am committed to a quick FE practice most days. I rigorously practice a minimum of 3 nasal exercises each time. Facial exercises work. Check out this scientific article summarizing the results of using a facial exercise tool to strengthen the mouth, chin and neck area here.

Nasal Massage

Nasal massage is important to stimulate skin processes and circulation. If you don’t do nose exercises (and you should if you want to maintain nose shape) at a minimum practice nasal massage. Most facial massage programs include nasal massage. Nasal massage will help you learn about the shape of your nose so that you may track changes over time.

Advanced Skin Care Tools

A large part of DIY skin care includes use of a variety of facial devices and tools including but not limited to electrical stimulation, radiofrequency, dermabrasion, microneedling, Light Emitting Diodes, Near-Infrared Lights and more. These type of DIY tools stimulate the skin and are effective when regularly used. Take time to use these tools on the entire nose and little nose crannies as best as possible. Some devices come with smaller heads to fit into nose angles to help maintain small pores and promote tight nose skin.

Take Away

With a few minor nose maintenance practices you can maintain your nose angles, slope and shape throughout your life. Pay special attention to the nose when using standard and advanced skin care practices.
