The term cosmeceutical generally refers to a product created by combining a cosmetic with a pharmaceutical, or drug that is designed to promote biologic activities that improve the skin.
Cosmeceuticals consist of vitamins or other active ingredients such as antioxidants, minerals, proteins, enzymes, hormones, acids, and herbs that are added to skin care products. Some cosmeceuticals require prescriptions, such as certain forms of vitamin A including retinoic acid or tretinoin.
